Catherine Bourgeois

Catherine Bourgeois has a multidisciplinary approach to theatre, which includes fine arts, design and directing. Since studying scenography at Cégep de Ste-Thérèse’s Option-Theatre and completing her under-graduate degree in Theatre Design at UQÀM, she has designed sets, costumes and lights for various Montreal theatre companies. She also has a Master’s degree in Theatre Directing from the Central School of Speech and Drama (London, UK.)
In 2003, Catherine co-founded the Montreal theatre company Joe Jack et John where she co-wrote and directed their first play, Quand j'étais un animal (Manuel de taxidermie), in addition to designing the set and projections. She then conceived and directed their second production, Ce soir l’Amérique prend son bain, in 2005. Her latest co-creation and directing credit is the company’s production of Go shopping [et fais le mort], which premiered in October 2006. This project, which toured in 2007, exposed Catherine’s directorial talent and established the company’s livelihood. In 2009, she co-created Mimi, an intimate show greatly appreciated.
Catherine has also worked with Imago Theatre for over five years, where she was Associate Director from 2005 to 2008. She has been Assistant Director to Clare Schapiro on Bye Bye Baby, has collaborated on Women on the Brink (an international collaboration with Romania and Scotland) and most recently directed The Baroness and the Pig by Michael Mackenzie, which was presented at Théâtre La Chapelle last May (Best English Production by MECCA and ACQT).
Catherine is also assistant to celebrated modern dancer and choregrapher Margie Gillis
